What happened to Mr Mannan?

In a road accident on Valentine's day last week, Abdul Mannan was injured inside a motorised tuk tuk in Dhaka, Bangladesh. He was visiting his home country, as he does each year.

Mr Mannan is 70, an Australian citizen, and has two sons: Tanveer and Tauseef.

The incident damaged his spine and he is currently paralysed from the neck down.

It is hoped surgery will restore some of his movement.

The medical team and the Australian Consulate advising the Mannans have recommended he undergo an operation in Australia to relieve pressure on the spinal cord. This surgery cannot be carried out in Dhaka with confidence.

Transporting Mr. Mannan is the primary issue as medical evacuation (medivac) costs have been quoted as high as $270,000.

To help support the family and to try to raise funds needed for transport, a fundraising page has been set up. Please see separate post for details.
